Tips for Success
Get Enough Sleep
Have you ever been reading and then realized that you have been reading forever, but you have no memory of what you read? Kids, ages 5-8, need between 9-11 hours of sleep and Teens need 8-10 hours. If you don’t get enough sleep, you won’t be able to focus and learn the information that you need to be successful.
Be on Time (or better yet, Early)
There is nothing like starting your day in a rush to make it out the door, to the bus stop or car and to school on time! When you are late, it sets the tone for the whole day. Plan to be early! It’s like your Karate classes. You should not only be on time, but you should be a few minutes early so you can warm up and be ready to line up when your Sensei (Teacher) calls for you to.
Eat Healthy
Proper nutrition is one of the most important things that you can do to make sure you are successful in school. Make sure you eat a healthy breakfast with lots of protein. NEVER SKIP BREAKFAST! Choose eggs over pancakes and cereal. The eggs will fill you up longer and will help you to focus on your schoolwork. Try taking your lunch with healthy options so you are not filling up on processed foods! Skip the sugary sodas and juices and go for milk or even better, choose water.
Don’t Procrastinate
If you have an assignment such as a paper to write or a science experiment, work on it each day. Don’t wait until the night before it is due to complete it. Do you wait until the night before a belt test to practice what you will be testing over? No! I didn’t think so! You work on it each day so that when belt testing comes, you are ready! Cramming for any test, or turning in a project that you started the day before it was due, will not make you successful! Work on it each day and you will be successful.
“Sound Mind in a Sound Body” This is an old martial arts saying that basically means, if you take care of your body, you will be taking care of your mind as well. When you exercise, your blood starts flowing and takes oxygen to all of your muscles. It helps you think clearly and increases your focus and makes you feel better, mentally and physically. It gives you more energy and combined with getting enough sleep and eating a balanced diet you will be unstoppable!
